This strategy is called Touch Math. The strategy is usually used for students who struggle with number sense. However it is PERFECT for Pre-K/K students who don't have ANY number sense yet. Stick with numbers 1-5 to begin. Use an incentive because.... they are 4! Gotta hook them somehow right?
Write the number sentence and put the amount of dots that will represent the number. Put the skittles on top of the dots. They touch the skittles (that match the numeral) to find the total. In this exercise she is learning number recognition (what each number looks like in written form), one to one correspondence (touching the object and saying the correct amount), and counting to find a total.
